Jennie Buckner, editor of The Charlotte Observer, took pains to explain the paper’s decision to print a grisly photo of the Iraqi attack on U.S. civilians on the front page and seeks comment on the choice.

I think because the paper ran good, original reporting on the story, noting the North Carolina connection to Blackwater USA, it was clear the intent was not to just shock readers with graphic wire copy.

This is a big, ugly story in need of a full airing.

And I think it is fair to wonder if contractors can be safely used in areas where they will obviously be targets. A bunch of middle-aged American guys in an SUV is not exactly deep cover in Iraq.
