A District Court judge has ordered the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system to turn over documents for prosecutors’ sexual battery case agains former Atkins High School principal Dan Piggott.
Looks like the school system is protecting attorneys’ notes in preparation for the lawsuit expected to be filed by the accusers:
Drew Davis, the school system’s attorney, said during the hearing that some of the documents he withheld contain his legal advice to the school board and to Superintendent Don Martin. That shouldn’t be turned over because it’s protected by attorney-client privilege, he said.
Other documents were withheld because the school system disagrees with prosecutors and Piggott’s attorneys about what’s relevant to the criminal case, he said.
…..Piggott’s attorneys agree with prosecutors because they need to know all the evidence against him, said Chris Clifton, one of the attorneys Piggott hired.
“Before trial they’re already lawyering up,” Clifton said of Piggott’s accusers. “I think we’re certainly entitled to anything that could show bias or (financial) interest.”
After all was said and done, Davis was allowed to keep the documents containing his legal advice to the school system. Bad enough the school system is dealing with creepy allegations against one of its principals, but it has to go ahead and brace for a lawsuit, too. I guess you could say WSFCS is only worried about saving its own rear end, but that’s the state of the world — and the education system.
