The Maggie Valley Board of Aldermen is concerned the police department is too large. The town has 10 officers for its 1146 residents. The North Carolina League of Municipalities recommends 2.4 officers for every 1000 residents. Since the Census determined 2/3 of Maggie’s homes are for part-time residents, the population may be tripled for the worst-case scenario. Then, there are the skiers and bikers who come to town seasonally.
Folks who want to cut the police force claim their swarming around bars at night is detrimental to business. The problem has made headlines before, and it is evidently shared by the Town of Highlands.
