After a night of negotiating, police broke up the Occupy Winston-Salem protest Sunday morning. After attempts to debate city ordinance failed, protestors voluntarily left the area, and no arrests were made.

Negotiations with City Manager Lee Garrity revolved around whether or not would protestors would sleep on the grounds of City Hall. Summing it up, Garrity said they could stay there all night if they didn’t sleep. That would constitute camping, which violates the ordinance. When protesters rolled out the sleeping bags, police were summoned to break it up. Chief Scott Cunningham “was there in a windbreaker and khaki pants, carrying a sidearm.”
