I was waiting for more fallout from the high speed chase that took place across much of South Charlotte last week, causing several wrecks, and leaving one woman injured. CMPD declined to join Mint Hill police in pursuit of David Keith Spalty.

Spalty was spotted in Mint Hill driving a truck that had been reported stolen and sped away when approached by Mint Hill police. Spalty’s record includes several felony convictions for burglary.

CMPD simply does not give a high priority to property crimes, especially stolen vehicles, so it is not a surprise that chasing down Spalty was not high on CMPD’s to-do list. Besides, it really would be like a Hollywood movie set out there were CMPD to give chase in all the stolen vehicle situations in town.

Ultimately, however, it is down to the courts to lock up the Spaltys longer than a few months. It will be very interesting to see how Spalty fares in Mecklenburg County on his latest charges. There very well might be absolutely no point in chasing these guys down.
