One of the advantages of working from home is being able to do whatever you want while you work, like watch TV. A while back I discovered that All in the Family comes on TVLand every morning at 9:30. While there’s no doubt the show was groundbreaking, it’s still amazing how many of the topics resonate today. In one recent episode, Meathead had to have an appendectomy, and he and Gloria had no idea how they would afford the $150 for the operation.

In today’s Season 4 episode, the Bunkers are giving a going-away party for Henry Jefferson. as usual, Archie and Henry get into another racially-tinged political debate, this revolving around the questiion of whether or not it’s time for a black president.

Gloria then interrupts, saying it’s high time the country had a woman president.

“Mr. Jefferson, you may have come a long way, baby, but we’re the ones who truly have to overcome,” she says.

The plot revolves around George Jefferson’s refusal to attend to his brother’s going away party because it’s in Archie’s house. Archie says it’s because blacks don’t have “no family cohesiveness,” an issue that was just addressed yesterday.

With what went during this year’s Democratic primary, it’s interesting to see that this debate was going on 35 years ago — and with a sitcom serving as the forum. They just don’t make ’em like they used to.
