The federal corruption indictment of Ruffin Poole, a top legal aide to former Gov. Mike Easley, led to media opportunities for Carolina Journal editors. Both Managing Editor Rick Henderson and Executive Editor Don Carrington discussed Poole’s legal woes during appearances on WPTF Radio’s afternoon show within a day of the indictment, while Carrington also discussed the case with Pete Kaliner on WBT Radio in Charlotte and with Curtis Wright on WLTT Radio in Wilmington. Henderson returned to the WPTF afternoon news show Thursday, the day Poole made his first federal court appearance in connection with the indictment. Senate Republicans also highlighted Henderson’s CJ exclusive on the indictment, and the Lincoln Tribune later picked up Associate Editor David Bassarticle on Poole’s first appearance in federal court to address the charges.
