I had to re-read the following sentence three times to believe the author actually wrote it:

In my work as a Supreme Court justice, I was required by the
Constitution  to fairly and impartially apply the law ? not the law as I
wanted it to be but the law as it was.

Why was I reluctant to shed my disbelief? The author is Sandra Day O’Connor, who made an entire career out of turning the law into what she wanted it to be.

While O’Connor’s judicial activism aggravated originalists and others who believe in faithful adherence to the Constitution, her unwillingness to apply the law impartially won her vast praise from the fans of liberal court rulings.
