Finally. Finally it is out in the open that Charlotte’s train-building dreams mean re-directing city General Fund dollars toward train-building.

Even if — if mind you — the feds decide to throw $25m. at all of 1.5 miles worth of streetcar line down Elizabeth Ave. that would still leave $20m. that the city would have to fund. The only place you get $20m. is by taking it away from other city services. Police, fire, roads — those are the biggies. That’s it. No more ducking and weaving on this issue.

Property tax hike? By definition any future hike would go to fund the streetcar construction and cover the $1.5m. annual tab to run it.

So who is for that?
