My favorite part of Asheville City Council’s meeting last night was when we heard the report about why the meeting had been moved to the US Cellular Center. During the recent cold snap, when Duke Energy was putting out warnings to all to manage their use of electricity, the city did experience a brownout. It was then that the sprinkler system on the seventh floor of city hall burst. Water, water was everywhere, but so were civil engineers, and the firemen were practically next-door. James Ayers, who is filling the city’s new position of General Services Director, was impressed by the fast thought and action he witnessed. In particular, he mentioned how, in order to protect sensitive areas from water damage, crisis interveners acted on somebody’s idea to pull out the toilets and squeegee the water down the holes.
