Thirty-eight Forsyth County lawyers removed their names from Office of Indigent Services court-appointed attorneys list.

With IDS facing a $12 million budget deficit, hourly compensation would be reduced from $75 per hour to $50 per hour:

The average private attorney spends $58 an hour on operating costs, including rent, computer access, office assistants and other expenses, she said.

“If you cut it by $10, they can make the same money flipping burgers,” Carman said. “If you cut it to $50, they’re basically donating their time.”

Another impact of IDS budget cuts could mean defendants could have, say, a real estate lawyer representing them in court.
