The Journal editorializes on the controversy surrounding the proposed Davie County School bond and Superintendent Steve Lane’s DWI charge:
Critics of a $37 million bond request for a second high school are raising questions about Lane’s DWI charge at Emerald Isle last summer. The charge was dismissed in December after the officer who pulled Lane didn’t show for court.
The critics deny that they’re raising the issue to undermine the bond vote next month, but they certainly give that impression. If that is their motivation, it’s a sorry way of doing business.
That said, Lane and the school board need to come clean on this one — not to appease any bond critics, but just because that’s what public officials owe their public.
I also have to wonder about Lane’s claim that he “blew” because he hadn’t eaten anything due to a scheduled colonoscopy. A day at the beach with a couple of beers doesn’t sound like normal pre-colonoscopy behavior, nor does Emerald Isle sound like the right place for such a procedure.
