Today’s N&R headline says a lot:

Supporters hand on Obama’s every word

From the story:

There was an air of excitement as the faithful assembled. Many wore T-shirts, some bearing Obama’s likeness in rich colors of gold and brown, others with a single word in white: “Obama.”

They spoke of unity, too: white supporters alongside black, young faces — some not old enough to vote — alongside those who could have voted for Kennedy.

The mood livened inside. The crowd broke into applause and cheers each time someone came from backstage. Their eyes searched wildly for Obama as the few lucky supporters chosen to sit on stage rehearsed their welcome with campaign officials.

I generally avoid using the old ‘if this were a Republican’ comparison, but I can’t imagine a crowd reacting this way if, say, John McCain were holding a town hall meeting at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Update: Obama quote from today’s Journal story:

Obama also spoke in general terms about his faith and about how it informs his politics.

“I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins and that his grace and his mercy and his power – through him – that I can achieve everlasting life,” he said.

He said that Christianity has taught him the importance of caring for the poor and treating all people with dignity.
