Many artists and groups have their “signature” songs, which are the tunes for which they are best recognized. They are played ad nauseum on radio, and listeners know each nuance and instrumental interlude by heart. They are supposed to be the best songs on the albums from which they originate.

For me, that’s often not the case. Some that come to mind:

Billy Joel’s “The Stranger”: “Just the Way You Are,” “Movin’ Out,” and “Only the Good Die Young” are the signature tunes, but my favorite song is “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.”

“Led Zeppelin IV”: “Stairway to Heaven” is the classic, but I prefer “Misty Mountain Hop” and “Going to California.”

“Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd”: This may be blasphemy in these parts, but instead of “Free Bird,” you can “Gimme Three Steps” and “I Ain’t the One.”
