RALEIGH – The John Locke Foundation applauds the North Carolina General Assembly for its critical vote to override Governor Stein’s veto of the Personal Privacy Protection Act (Senate Bill 416), a key measure designed to safeguard the constitutional rights of donors to nonprofit organizations.

“Today, the General Assembly has reaffirmed a bedrock principle of American liberty — the right to support charitable causes without fear of retribution,” said Donald Bryson, President and CEO of the John Locke Foundation. “This veto override ensures that North Carolina citizens can support causes they believe in without having their privacy threatened by government overreach or public intimidation.”

The Personal Privacy Protection Act will prevent state agencies from collecting or disclosing the personal information of donors to nonprofit organizations, unless such disclosure is legally required or part of a criminal investigation.

The John Locke Foundation thanks legislative leaders for standing firm on this vital issue of privacy and First Amendment freedoms.
