I’ll pop up on WBT around 3:45 this afternoon to talk with Tara on new transit taxes for CATS. But I first want to re-establish the timeline for the additional half-cent sales tax question, which is already getting blurry.

Recall that were it not for local Tea Party efforts in 2009 — really the coming out party for the Tea Party movement in MeckCo — Mecklenburg might already have authority to levy an additional half-cent for transit. When the Triad and the Triangle were getting their half-cent for transit pushed through the GA there was a push to add another half-cent for Charlotte — in case. Both the Charlotte city council and the Metropolitan Transit Commission voted to ask Raleigh for the added half-cent — in case. Or so we were told. We didn’t actually need it and we wouldn’t use it was just to make things easier.

Another lie — one which is oddly echoed in the sudden local government consolidation push. Oh, no. It is not to have more power and grow government. It would just make things easier. In case.

Well now the fake “in case” has been dropped. Either CATS gets additional taxes or the entire 2030 Plan is DOA.
