I was working around the house all day, and I left the radio on WWNC to distract me. At about 5:00 this morning, the Carolina Journal news magazine was on. Michael Sanera of the John Locke Foundation put in very simple terms the fallacies of government attempts to provide affordable housing. He was followed by William Niskasen from the Cato Institute making arguments for social security reform. A couple other characters from the JLF were interviewed, too. “What nice programming,” thought I. By the time people started waking up, two ladies from UNCA were talking about their diversity program. Around 7:00, Ingle’s public service announcement that told us how to buy more of their groceries was on. We learned such valuable things as, “Rosemary can be used to season roast chicken,” and, “Snacks should be eaten in moderation.” The next eight hours was filled with a repeating loop about inter-league baseball. I even listened to Cigar Dave, but when the ghost buster’s program came on, I could take no more.

Yesterday on the same station, Councilman Brownie Newman complained that the JLF had been inaccurate in stating that Asheville’s taxes were among the highest in the state. He did this last year, too. According to Newman, the tax rates are lower, so one is something on a par with being intellectually dishonest if he multiplies the rate by the valuation to calculate his taxes.
