While guest-hosting Matt Mittan’s “Take a Stand” afternoon drive talk show on AM 570 WWNC today, Bryan Freeborn, incumbent candidate for Asheville City Council made a remark about the “illusion of property rights.”

An infuriated Dave Goree called in and took him to task, saying that comment almost caused him to drive off the road. He cursed twice, saying he worked hard to buy his land, he paid for it, and he pays taxes on it, so he should be able to do whatever he wants on it. Freeborn objected. Goree shot back that Freeborn’s job as an elected official is first to defend the US Constitution, second to uphold the state constitution, and third to support the city charter. Freeborn retorted that activist judges had made it otherwise, and Goree rebutted stating those rulings are going to be as fleeting as prohibitions against Blacks and women voting. In the end, Freeborn maintained that property rights no longer exist, and that what one does with his own property is subject to community say-so. Goree expressed appreciation for Freeborn making the remark in front of such a wide audience.

The next caller invited Freeborn to join the Hokey-Pokey Party founded in part on the philosophy that people only rent their land from the government, anyway.

The podcast should be up soon here.
