NCGS maps indicating landslide activity and potential therefor have mysteriously vanished from the Macon County web site. Instead of ordering them put back on, the Planning Board’s steep slope subcommittee, under the controversial leadership of Al Slagle, shared concerns with two board members in the real estate business that the maps could hurt sales. Furthermore, the maps could pose liabilities if people without a certificate of competence from the state (e.g., us morons) tried to read them:

Subcommittee Chairman Al Slagle agreed, but backed off forwarding the suggestion to the planning board after two subcommittee members — who sell real estate professionally — opposed the idea. Reggie Holland and John Becker explained they believe the maps cause more harm than good. This, they said, because the maps lack meaningful context for laypersons trying to interpret trained scientists’ work.
