It’s a familiar refrain, and now comes a call for a national wealth tax on assets to fund public education. The latest misguided proposal comes from former Clinton administration Secretary of Labor, Robert Reich. But George Leef, writing on the web site of the Future of Freedom Foundation, blasted Reich’s suggestion for reasons that extend well beyond the fundamental misconception that educational success is contingent on more money. Reich’s tax would require a massive new federal bureaucracy to determine asset values, Leef explained, and would begin a never-ending cycle of increases to the tax rate. Leef’s commentary was also published at the web site of Education News.
