RE: “Judges have upheld Asheville’s five-year-old annexation ordinance for the Huntington Chase area. In January 2006, a trial court had ruled against homeowners challenging the ordinance.”

On Friday’s “Take a Stand!” radio program, City Council Incumbant Bryan Freeborn (on the ballot today) talked about the “illusion of property rights” in our country – saying that the idea that you are guarenteed property rights in this country is nothing but folly. He talked about how the “common good” is more important than one property owners use of their own land. He also talked about the proper role of government being to create “community” – he made this argument in defense of his vote to ban gated communities in Asheville. He said that gated communities were made to keep poor and black people out. There were many topics that he brought back around to his belief that government was the sollution to social ills, even acknowledging that many consider him to be a socialist (somthing he did not deny by the way). But on the issue of “the illusion of property rights” – I guess he was right.
