Mitch, “The Morning After” was in the first Poseidon Adventure (or Poop-Side Down Adventure as Mad magazine called it) and actually won an Academy Award. “Raindrops” probably started the slide in 1969 when it won as Best Song and it’s been all down hill for Oscar songs ever since (with a couple of exceptions). Compare “Its Hard Out Here for a Pimp” (2005) and “I’m Easy” (1975)  with, say, “Days of Wine and Roses” (1962), “Moon River” (1961) or “The Shadow of Your Smile” (1965) and tell me there hasn’t been a huge quality dropoff.
