It’s worth noting that Mozart was the first composer of note who figured out how to make a good living in the free market. Virtually everyone prior to Mozart relied upon an aristocratic patron for support. Mozart saw that he could earn his own living based on writing and performing, so he broke away from the “court composer” gig. What paid his (substantial) bills in Vienna for years was mainly his exquisite piano concertos. He wrote ’em, played ’em and pocketed the profits from his concerts.

If you’re into a bit of Mozart Madness this weekend, try any of his piano concerti. A good back to back sampler would be #20 and #21, which provide the light and dark contrast Kristol mentions.
