I think Jon misses the point of the Cato article. For the libertarian think tank, The Cato Insititute, the reason for rooting for Duke is not that “the large mega-universities are the Wal-Marts of higher education.” It’s because Duke is–for the most part–private. The two key lines in the Cato piece
“While the Blue Devils may be insufferable, at least they don’t get their competitive edge by picking taxpayers’ pockets.”
“Hate them all you want, but they are not the true devils of college sports. Those are the mammoth state universities that steal from the taxpayers…”
The important word here is “state” not “mommoth.”
