Like many, I enjoy the Pope Center’s “Course of the Month” feature. This month, Jon Sanders writes about a literature course at Duke called Weapons of Mass Entertainment: the Poetics and Politics of Video Games. Only at our “best” colleges and universities could you find something like this!

I was wrong. Today I learned that Blair Elementary School in Wilmington used $20,000 in federal money to buy 23 Playstation systems and “educational” games. Principal Sharon Sand said the games “reinforce the state’s standard course of study.” Of course! The standards say, “The learner will demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of computer and other technologies.” Now I see how that works.

The lesson for today: You are never too young or too old to play video games for class.
