I sat through the 3 1/2 hour Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee meeting today. I learned that North Carolina has the greatest, most cutting-edge education system in the nation…just not enough money.

I also caught Dr. Garland’s talk and I really do not have anything to add to Becki’s superb summary of her presentation. It appears that DPI will listen to the thousands of people (both liberals and conservatives, by the way) that believe the current proposal is wacky. It is likely that the new requirements will include two years of U.S. history in high school.

This is probably sad news for supporters of the proposed changes – oops – Draft 1.0 or whatever. Proponents included the Department of Public Instruction, the State Board of Education, the News & Observer, the Sanford Herald, and Dr. Stephen Jackson of NC Policy Watch.
