Jon’s right — the argument is ridiculous. Getting the heavily subsidized tuition at a UNC school or not is hardly going to be the turning point in anyone’s life. There are plenty of scholarships available to Fitzsimon’s hypothetical student in addition to the equity financing available through My Rich Uncle. Many of the private schools would die to have a superstar student and would go to great lengths to get such a student to enroll.

This displays beautifully the liberal mindset: unless the state gives people something, they will flounder and lead wasted lives. It just ain’t so. Poor people in a free society usually find ways to succeed without help from our great governmental nanny.
