So Carville is suggesting that the Democrats return to being the small government party, as was the case back in the days of Grover Cleveland, perhaps the most fiscally responsible president ever. Interesting idea, but it would require them to turn their backs on interest groups such as the teachers unions and trial lawyers that depend on Dem politicians to fly air cover for them as they continue to suck up money like super-powered shop-vacs. How well would a Cleveland Democrat (assuming one could be found — such a discovery would be akin to finding the coelecanth in 1938) fare in Iowa and New Hampshire? How much enthusiasm would there be for a candidate who proposed cutting spending as opposed to those who promise more goodies?

If Carville is serious, I wish him good luck, but his proposed turnaround looks like a pipedream.
