Appearing in today’s N&R, a couple of national columnists explore themes touched on earlier this week.

Cal Thomas says HUD should get the axe after the Washington Post revealed —–surprise — they’ve flushed billions in taxpayers’ money. Readers of this blog know I feel the same way.

Meanwhile, George Will discusses California Gov. Jerry Brown’s plan to address the state’s budget deficit:

As a candidate, Brown said he would seek voters’ approval for any taxes to close the yawning budget deficit. He wanted a referendum this June on a five-year extension of “temporary” taxes and fees imposed in 2009 and due to expire soon. In an off-year referendum, turnout would be low — and dominated by pro-taxation public employee unions.

North Carolina legislators are tackling the issue of special elections to pass tax increases. Note earlier this week Cabarrus County pulled off a sales tax increase with a special election, just as Randolph County did last year.
