The mountain is the misperception that targeted tax incentives are necessary to promote the North Carolina economy.

Sen. Dalton read the newspaper excerpts to bolster the case for targeted incentives. (They must work; Florida cites them as the reason businesses are moving here.) That action was a not-so-subtle jab aimed at lawmakers who vote against targeted tax incentives.

And he is not alone. A large majority of state legislators on both sides of the aisle support each targeted tax incentive package that comes down the pike.

As long as they think North Carolina needs targeted incentives — rather than the low tax rates and other items your cite — free-market thinkers face a challenge.
