This is classic. Schlesinger points to warming starting in the 1800s and relates it to a build up of CO2, except significant buildups of CO2 did not begin until the second half of the 20th century. Notice he doesn’t mention that beginning in the middle of the 19th century the earth began to emerge from what is known as the “little ice age.” What a shocker, an ice age ends and the earth warms. Last, but certainly not least, Schlesinger points to warming registered by “weather station data.” This is important because of the three temperature records–ground level weather stations, satellite, and weather balloons–only the weather stations show any warming over the last 25 years. I think this is called ?cherry picking” your data. Ground level measurements are also considered the least reliable of the three for at least two reasons. First, they cover the smallest percentage of the globe, for example there are no weather stations on the ocean. Second, they suffer from what is known as the heat island effect. The thermometers are put in places like airports, where over time the area around it becomes suburbanized. The concrete and buildings radiate heat and the temperature rises–all having nothing to do with global warming.
