The Sox and A-Rod had an agreement in which Rodriguez willingly gave up about $28 million in salary for the privilege of playing on a contending team instead of on a last-place team. The union forbade him from making that tradeoff because it judged that moving from a losing team to a playoff-bound team did not add value to his contract. Go figure. And Go Yanks!
