This year’s Oscar winner is so bad in so many ways. But Jon, you got me to look back at previous Oscar winners,
and you’re right, there is a noticeable slide since “Raindrops.” That
1990s run of Disney animation pap was pretty unbearable, but I guess
“You Light Up My Life” can be forgiven considering it owned the pop
charts for so long in 1977.

Best of them? Check out Frank Sinatra’s “Academy Award Winners” album (with Nelson Riddle) and you will find many of the great ones, interpreted terrifically.

One of the worst scores had to be for “Forrest Gump,”
in which several great 60s tunes were machine-gunned at the audience in
a near-unrelenting barrage. Talk about heavy-handed — could have
totally wrecked the film if the rest of it wasn’t so good.
