Jon:

If I had kids, I would not let them listen to or watch Barney as well. I’ve got a problem with a purple creature going around all the time saying “I love you” and “Will you be my friend.” ARGHHHHHHH! It’s almost as bad as listening to John Kerry say “Bring it on” over and over and over again.

But back to the music. I can remember when I was four or five watching He Haw with my grandparents and listening to “real” country music … not some of this junk on the radio today. I don’t think I was ever introduced to classical music, besides Peanuts movies and Looney Tunes, until I was in junior high or high school.

Now, I agree “Barenaked Ladies” would not be and is not appropriate for a four-year-old. But what about George Strait or George Jones? I listened to wide variety growing up and I’m ok … minus the few brain cells I lost this morning driving into work with the radio up too loud to keep me awake. I’m not proposing letting a four-year-old listen to Emenim, Brittany Spears, or Aerosmith. I am against that. But I do think they should have a wide variety of musical experiences — classical, bluegrass, Christian, etc.
