Terry,

The fact stadiums are now in the picture reminds me of
a situation at a high school I once had to cover in West Virginia.
Lewis County, W.Va., back in the 1990s, passed a bond that called for
improvements to the school including a new football stadium at the
school. They had been using the old field in behind the former high
school, now junior high. After the bond was passed and the field
constructed, it wasn’t ready for play. The field was horrible and it
was a mess from top to bottom. They were still using the old field last
I checked, though I?m sure that has changed by now.

That allows me to say one of my favorite pet peeves, why do taxpayers
have to fund sports stadiums regardless if it is for the (Insert Your
New City Here) Marlins or East Wake High School? If a stadium is needed
badly enough, allow the touchdown clubs and other booster organizations
raise the funds to support the construction. Of course, those groups
will complain that it would be impossible to raise that kind of money
because they are only use to doing dinners to raise money for uniforms.
Is that really the taxpayer’s problem? There are enough businesses in
Wake County that would chip in on the cost, in my opinion, especially
if they got to name the field or have their logo somewhere at the
stadium.
