I also noted the irony that the N&R endorsed attorney and local blogger Sam Spagnola in tomorrow’s District 3 Guilford County commissioners primary, while the Rhino endorsed incumbent Linda Shaw.

I actually anticipated the Rhino’s logic —- that Shaw has quietly gone along with budget-cutting measures undertaken by commission chairman Skip Alston. That’s exactly the same logic the N&R used when endorsing Spag. But the fact that such opposites view Shaw in the same light doesn’t speak well, does it?

Don’t get me wrong —- like the Rhino, I find the county’s stealth-mode budget-cutting refreshing, a much-needed change from the usual moaning and groaning among public officials about how there’s just never enough money. And you know I love the way they push school board’s buttons.

By the same token, the mysterious budget process and apparent cluelessness among commissioners is disturbing and still leads one to believe that something’s not quite right with Alston’s partnership with vice chairman Steve Arnold.

But keep in mind that Arnold’s not going to be there after the November election, so the best way to see if Alston’s commitment to government deadwood is honest would be to really shake things up and get rid of Shaw and bring in Spag to keep an eye on Skip from the right.

I’ve read Spag’s comments on local blogs and I have no doubt he has a firm grasp of the issues. Voters in District 3 might be ready for some change.
