Terry,

I couldn’t agree more that Linda Darling-Hammond would be terrible. She’s one of those education blob fanatics who thinks that what we need is more government spending on education and more government control.

The heck of it is that nobody who would want the job of Education Secretary could possibly be any good. Only a person who opposed the very concept of a Department of Education could do the least bit of good, and then only by using the position as a soapbox from which to denounce all the innumerable instances of government meddling that gives us education that simultaneously increases in cost and falls in effectiveness.

The essence of the problem, as Thomas Sowell wrote many years ago, is that our education system is dominated by the interests of the producers, not the interests of the consumers. Changing the name on the door of the Department of Ed secretary is like bringing in a new person to head up the alchemy laboratory. It simply CAN”T work no matter who is in charge.
