Here in New England, America Coming Together is trying to portray President Bush as a Yankees fan. Today the group sent out a press release that compiles three quotes in which Bush praises George Steinbrenner or the Yankees.
Look closely, however, and you will see that two of the quotes are from the Rose Garden ceremony in which Bush honored the Yankees for winning the 2000 World Series, as all presidents honor all World Series winners.
The third quote is from a December 30, 2000 Larry King interview in which King asks Bush, “Are the Texas Rangers ever going to beat the Yankees?” Naturally, the question is omitted from the press release, but part of Bush’s response, in which he calls the Yankees “a great baseball team” and says Steinbrenner has “done a good job with the Yanks in recent times” are included. Of course, in December 2000, both statements were objectively true.
The last part of the press release is the most hilarious. It simply notes that Steinbrenner and Alex Rodriguez have contributed to Bush’s campaign, as if this were sufficient reason to vote against Bush.
Interesting that the press release fails to mention Curt Schilling’s support of Bush, or that most professional athletes support Republicans.
