George’s assessment is correct. The General Assembly’s failure to re-authorize payday lending illustrates that the Nanny State mentality is alive and well among state policy-makers. Assuming full disclosure of the loan terms, there is no justification for elected officials to make the blanket assumption that we are all incapable of making financial decisions for ourselves. Business owners like Willie Green deserve the opportunity to offer a product or service that consumers want. Ultimately, the marketplace should determine the success or failure of payday lending, not paternalistic legislators.
