George, your post inspired me to check, as I have done on occasion ? and don’t look now, but … the “Edwards Center” has one (1) actual, straight-up event planned to help Candidate John get to the heart of the “New Poverty” (see the adjacent photo for the telltale sign of American poverty as defined by UNC) just in time for the 2008 primary season!

Here’s the event, which no doubt will put a serious dent in the paid UNC center figurehead’s campaigning in Iowa and elsewhere:

Event: Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity – Coffee Hour
Start Date: 8/31/2006
End Date: 8/31/2006
Time: 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Description
Please join Senator [sic] John Edwards, Director of the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity, for an informal coffee hour on Thursday, August 31st from 10-11 a.m. Sen. Edwards and members of the Center staff will be on hand to talk about the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity, to hear about your studies and community work, and to listen to your ideas for future projects and for research on poverty. Come with your ideas, questions, and appetites – refreshments will be provided. Drop in as your class schedule allows and learn about issues of poverty, work and opportunity!

Frankly, I’m surprised it’ll take them an entire hour to talk about the center. Participant[s] will learn about “issues of poverty, work and opportunity” ? wonder if they’ll learn about the center’s poverty of data on real poverty in America, the lack of work expected from the center’s director and the opportunity for UNC to have a celebrity pol drawing good PR for them and for the celebrity pol to have a big-boy issue for the next presidential race?
