Guarino passes along Triadwatch’s red flag on the agenda for this Thursday’s Guilford County commissioners’ meeting: the U.S. Figure Skating Championships at the Greensboro Coliseum is asking the county for $40,000.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see why the championship are asking for taxpayer funds, although the obvious answer is the championships aren’t paying for themselves —-further diluting benefit to the community, as the good doctor points out.

Interesting that this ties into the controversy surrounding parking at the coliseum in the wake of hoops games involving ACC teams.

Note toward the end of the N&R story that coliseum director Matt Brown said that parking for the figure skating championships “shouldn’t be a problem because the coliseum capacity for those events is less than 10,000 people.”

Sounds like a low figure to me, seeing as how the championships were indeed promoted —as is everything that goes on up at the coliseum —– as a economic development driver.
