WUNC’s Laura Leslie channeled Maureen Dowd on this same topic today. On Twitter, Laura wrote “NYT’s Maureen Dowd GOES there (& it ain’t just SC, either.) Hate to think she’s right, but can’t find another rationale.” They both seemed to hear Rep. Joe Wilson include the word “boy” in his outburst last week. James Taranto has documented a trend of imputations of racism over such words as “humble,” “elitist,” and “skinny” (scroll down to Adjectives are Racist-II).
