Jon touches on a widespread misconception in the US, namely that the First Amendment says that no one can ever do anything to restrict another’s desire to communicate. That misconception probably stems from the fact that most schools these days don’t bother teaching students anything about the Constitution. All that the amendment says is that CONGRESS shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech. It does not place any restriction on the freedom of a newspaper to drop a cartoon.

Also annoying is the misuse of the word “censorship.” If the government prevents, for instance, the John Locke Foundation from putting out Carolina Journal because it bothers too many politicians, that is censorship. If an individual decides not to subscribe to CJ, that is not censorship.

That editor has made quite a fool of himself.
