Originally, the editor had been placed on suspension pending an
“investigation.” Unlike The Daily Tar Heel controversy, the Illinois
paper actually ran the Danish cartoons. I still see no problem with
running those cartoons. Newspapers are there to serve the purpose of
informing and bringing about ideas that may be controversial to some. A
newspaper or the media in general is not and should not be a
cheerleader to make everyone feel good about themselves and their
ideas. This action shows that the media and its professors at Schools
of Journalism have lost their backbone in standing up for the true
principles of journalism.
