Terry has highlighted another of the numerous educational buzzwords and catch phrases that are intended to get people all excited about new (and costly) programs that we supposedly need. We keep hearing about how the new global “knowledge economy” requires new educational approaches — not to mention more teachers and more years in formal schooling. The fact of the matter, however, is that the economy is changing very little. Most workers don’t compete with foreign producers and those who do just need the same skills they always have to be trainable for whatever their jobs require.
