Jon,

After reading the headline in the print version of this morning’s N&O, “Jobs, not welfare, key to escaping poverty,” then seeing the byiine, this observer wondered, “Has UNC’s professor of poverty had a ‘road to Damascus’ moment?”

Needless to say, disappointment — but no surprise — accompanied the realization that Professor Gene Nichol had not experienced an intellectual epiphany about the benefits of economic growth in alleviating the worst elements of poverty. Instead, the column Nichol wrote amounted to another misguided plea for an increase in the governmentmandated minimum wage.
