In yesterday’s Shaftesbury talk, Prof. John Dinan mentioned the resistance that some states have put up to the federal Real ID statute.  Apropos of that, Cato’s Jim Harper here discusses the future of that law, noting that the feds have set a deadline for state compliance — January 15, 2013. Then what? Perhaps a “High Noon” showdown in one or more states. There is nothing in the Constitution authorizing the federal government to impose its will in this matter. Will the statists who regard the Constitution as nothing but a relic to be kept on a dusty shelf and forgotten get their way again?
