The U.S. Justice Department signs off on the Dianne Bellamy-Small recall.

Now we get to see whether or not the Pulpit Forum’s letter has any influence:

The Justice Department is required to review recall elections to make sure the rights of minority voters are being protected. But there’s a catch: In the July 12 letter, the Justice Department says it can reopen the matter if new information “comes to our attention” between now and Friday, the end of the 60-day review period.

Last week, a group of predominantly black ministers urged the Justice Department in a letter to stop the recall, calling it a “vicious and blatant” campaign with a “coded appeal to racism.”

While we should never be surprised at what even a Bush Justice Department will do, I don’t think the letter will have much influence, in spite of its eloquent prose and elaborate history lesson.
