The Asheville Tea Party’s Recess Rally to protest government-controlled healthcare was deemed a success by its sponsors. From the road, all passersby could see was four activists trying to direct cars to the real thing. Safely secluded in a back parking lot, highly invisible from the road, almost 200 people listened as concerned citizens took the microphone with questions and comments that were recorded for delivery to Congressman Heath Shuler. Flags and homemade signs abounded. Organizers had intended the crowd to march down to the street when the rally was over, but instead, the unherded cats trickled down the hillside in onesies and twosies. On the street, thumbs-ups from drivers outnumbered fingers-ups about 4:1.
