While proponents of personal welfare now largely embrace a philosophy of “up and out,” or “a hand up, not a hand-out,” corporate welfare remains an inelastic target for thrown money. Linamar, which has already received a lot of money from state and local governments, is once again in need. The Henderson County Commissioners will consider granting an incentives package of $6,945,672 at their first meeting of 2016. Back in 2011, the Buncombe County Commissioners offered Linamar $9 million, Asheville City Council offered $2 million, and the state offered $2.7 million. Additional “rounds of public funding,” including another $3.5 million from the city in February, have been on local government agendas, but I’m too lazy just now to sort out what was new and what was already promised. But for the money, Linamar would locate in Columbia, SC.
